1) Teachers' Appreciation

Greetings! Need your help in planning a "Teachers' Appreciation" for all
teachers at Youth Church. This is a first as our Youth Church will soon
be four years old. So far, we plan: 1) a guest speaker, 2) poems from
children, 3) songs and 4) punch & cake for reception. Need ideas for
decorations, short skits for children and inexpensive gifts for teachers.
Thank you and God bless you!

2) Autumn Incentive Project

I am a Sunday School teacher at a small Baptist Mission. I went out in the woods and cut down a 5 foot tree. I used a tallow tree, but any tree with lots of small branches at top will work. I took all the leaves off ot it, and put it in one corner of our room. I then took several fall colors of construction paper, and cut leaves out of them. Then take clear contact paper, and laminate them. Punch a whole in the end by the stem. The kids can then write their names on them, and hang them on the tree every week. We have been doing this for two weeks, and the kids are really excited to see how many leaves the tree is getting. The goal of this is to help the kids to remember to:
bring Bible-brown leaf
bring visitor-red leaf
bring offering-green leaf (some parents don't have much money, so be sure to emphasize that it doesn't matter how much is brought, the main thing is to remember to bring it.)
pay attention thru class-orange leaf
not getting up during service to go to rest room-yellow leaf
learning memory verse-tan
You can make up all types of different things to do with this. My kids love this idea, and they never forget to bring their Bible, offering, and our services are much quieter and less disruptive now, since we don't have kids going to the rest room all the time :~)

3) Giving Craft?

Does anyone have an idea for a craft that would emphasize "The Gift of Giving". We wanted to make "Giving Banks" and use 3 small cylinder containers wrapped together so kids could use them as 'Giving Banks=savings for: God, Me, and the Bank.' But with 40 kids I would need 120 containers! (ie. pringle cans or crystal lite). SO...I'm STUCK for another idea. CAN YOU HELP? Thanks in advance!

Lock In ideas

In response to: Lock In --- Need ideas for filling those Loooong hours
between midnight and 8:00 a.m.

May I suggest a video about Jesus that corresponds with a Bible Jeopardy
game? Our association recently hosted a back to school Christian Lock In
with approximately 200 children ages 8 to 16 years of age. (NOTE:
Younger children stayed till 9:30 p.m. and then went home with parents).
The questions for the game are taken directly from the video. That way
if they don't pay attention to the video, they will not be able to answer
the questions. Serve POPCORN or other snacks during the viewing of the
video. Also we had Youth Ministers available for teen rap sessions.
This was very successful!

5) Glue?

Some time ago someone wrote in saying they used VHS tape boxes, covered them with vinyl, put gold ribbon around the edges , made one for each book of the Bible and used them to teach the books of the Bible. My question is: what kind of glue did they use to apply the vinyl to the plastic boxes? Nothing that I have tried has worked.

6) Teaching the parables to kids

>
Does anybody have a resource for teaching the parables of Jesus to children?

Hello! I'm not sure how much this will help the the Dobson's (father and daughter) have a book. I believe it's titled Parables for Kids. In the book they relate the parable to modern day living. This may be of help to you. You would still have to devise your teaching plans, but maybe this will help.

7)
Teaching the parables to kids

> Does anybody have a resource for teaching the parables of Jesus to children?

I've used a book by In Celebration called Parable Projects (by Linda
Standke). It's designed for use with kindergarten through 6th grade kids
using the scripture references and then including art projects for the kids.
It's a really good one!
Blessings,
Iris

8) Giving Thanks To God

I want to thank you for all your great ideas. I also wanted to share a
craft that i did with my sunday school class,i have ages 3 to 6, we were
talking about giving thanks to GOD,we took brown paper bags laid them
out flat and on the bottom of the bag before we opened it we wrote GIVE
THANKS TO GOD, i than traced there handprint and cut it out, glued the
fingers together, opened the and set it up and it looks like praying
hands, i let each child decorate there hands with markers and glitter
and glue, then took little pieces of paper and ask each child what they
were thankful to GOD for, wrote there answers on the paper and put them
in there bag of blessings and told them to have mom & dad to help them
say there prayers every day to thank GOD for the answers that were
written in their blessing bags. T he children really enjoyed making the bags with there own handprints and telling about what they were thankful for.GOD BLESS

9) Competitive Games

>give everyone a Bible and have a race. "Who is the first to find...?"

When all of the children in a class are similarly able academically, this
is a great idea. However, I would like to add a cautionary note - one of
our third grade teachers had a learning disabled child in her class, and
the child was embarrassed that she could not read well enough to look up
the passages quickly. Bible drills such as this one were torture for
her. The teacher learned to team the children together so they could help
each other, and to offer each group a chance to look up different
scripture references, discuss them, and share with the larger group.
Changing the group dynamics from competitive to cooperative was more
welcoming and helpful to the child who was struggling. Blessings, Kit
