1) Summer Sunday School
>>>. . . During the summer months we combine our Sunday School classes to
give regular teachers a break. . . I am finding it hard to find lessons,
crafts, games, projects, anything to teach this wide range of kids.
<<<
How about a lesson in praying? This topic should cover 3 - 4 weeks of
lesson plans. There are several scripture passages to help reinforce
these lessons. A few of my favorites are: Ephesians 5:20, James 5:13-16,
Jeremiah 29:12-13, Matthew 7:7. You could tell the students that there
are different ways to pray - first, formal prayer. Then teach them a
prayer to learn at home and recite in class. Such as: "I love you, God
with all my might. Keep me safe all through the night. Amen." The craft
that day could simply be coloring pictures of a child praying. The second
way of praying is just talking to our Lord. Praise Him and thank Him and
simply talk to Him. Then have the student draw a picture of him or
herself praying to God. I would then ask that they hang the picture in
their bedroom to remind them to pray. The 3rd form of prayer is singing.
The kids absolutely love this lesson, based on Psalm 100. "Make a joyful
noise unto the Lord. . ." Play a a cassette tape of Christian music and
teach the children a new song. Then make your own instruments - we made
ours out of toilet paper rolls that we decorated and filled with beans or
rice. We then went outside and had a little parade in which we sang and
played our instruments.
I hope this gives you some ideas - use your imagination to expand on my
suggestions. There are zillions of websites with coloring pages to print
and pass out. Please email me if you have any questions.

2) Bulletin Board Idea
I've certainly used enough of your ideas so here's a return favor for
Judy. She was looking for Bulletin board ideas. We are presently doing
one that plays off the theme of Ripley's Believe It or Not, only we're
calling it God's Believe It or Not. My Children's church class is doing
this. Use a large piece of colored paper & in the middle of it use large
letters to spell out the theme of God's Believe It or Not. Have the
children draw the pictures for the stories and write out the story in
their own words and interpretations. Use big headlines to draw attention
to such stories as-A Stick turns into a Snake--Exodus, It Rains
Food-Exodus, A Donkey Talks--the story of Balaam's donkey, A Fire Doesn't
Burn--the story of Shadrack, Meshach,& Abandego; A Bird Feeds A
Prophet--the story of the raven bringing food to the prophet; A Fish pays
taxes--about Jesus' way of paying his & one of his disciples
taxes--Matthew. There are many more amazing believe it or not stories
from the Bible. The kids enjoy drawing the pictures & telling the
stories. This is also a good way to get in a lot of teaching that they
will remember because they use what they learn. If displayed in the
proper place, you may also draw the attention of someone who doesn't come
to church often & might want to learn more about these amazing feats.
Hope this helps. God Bless your efforts. Andrea--Chester Church Of God

4) Frame Craft?
I was wondering if you have any SIMPLE frame crafts for 3 & 4 year olds?
I would really like it to be in the form of a picture frame, and was
hoping you could give me a few ideas! THANK YOU!
--from SSTN: Have the children use the precut colored craft foam shapes
(stars, butterflies, hearts, geometrics, etc.) and glue to a painted
cardboard frame. Or use scrap pieces of craft foam and glue to cardboard
to make a mosaic-look frame. Even just sponge painting a cardboard frame,
or finger print painting on the frame is effective.

9) Project for remodeling/rebuilding?
Hi Sarah: Our church is currently in the process of remodeling and we are
having our children help us with the project, by helping earn money. We
have three lessons coming up in regards to this that have me baffled what
to do for crafts. The first is the Gift of Giving. I looked in the
archives and everyone suggested banks. This seems like a good idea but
are there any other ideas on the subject? It won't take very long to make
them. Second topic is Nehemiah rebuilding the walls and the third topic
is King David building the temple. I love your newsletter and look
forward to reading it twice a week. I have gotten so many suggestions
from other teachers. God bless, Joni

10) Teacher Appreciation gift
Just wanted to share our idea for gifts for teachers this year. I found
pastel 3" flower pots at a craft store that were VERY inexpensive. We
planted marigold seeds in the pots and I ran off (on business card stock)
cards that said, "Thank you for growing us in God's word!" Taped the
cards to colored plastic toothpicks and put them in the plants. This pots
served as center pieces for our Appreciation dinner, and the teachers took
them home after. Sue - Lakewood, OH
