Dragonflies of Lent

by Priscilla McKinnon

“I am the way, and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me" John 14:6 (NIV).

This past summer we lost several of the screen panels on our patio after one of the storms. We decided to wait until after hurricane season to replace the panels.

In the fall we were invaded by dragonflies in our screened-in patio. I happen to like dragonflies because they eat other bugs. So I try to show them the way out to safety, but many just keep flying into our doors or screening and eventually they die.

During my rescue mission I began thinking of how many people think they know a better way for their lives then what God has planned. They think because they are good people that will get them to heaven. They don’t feel the need to find the truth by opening their hearts to Jesus. Some have not heard the truth of God’s love and what the scripture says about the way to eternal life. They follow their own way and get lost, which only brings them to the path of sin and death.

“God saved you by His special favor when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it” Ephesians 2:8-9 (NLT).

During the season of Lent take the opportunity to be aware of people who have never heard the story of why Jesus died on the cross. Share your testimony with someone or tell the story of Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection. God’s love and forgiveness is waiting for them if they would only open their hearts to Jesus. There is no greater joy then to know you might have planted a seed in someone--to rescue them--to get on the right path, showing them the way to the truth and life through Jesus.

Some of the dragonflies died while attempting to navigate their own course, while others discovered there was only one way to safety. For us, the gate that leads to eternal life is called “narrow.” This does not mean it is difficult to become a Christian, but that there is only one road that leads to eternal life with God. Believing in Jesus is the only way to heaven.

Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father, please give us the courage to spread the Good News of eternal life. Let us be willing to share our story and show your love. Holy Spirit gives us the wisdom to speak the truth to all. In Jesus name I pray. AMEN.
