You've Got Mail

God's Christmas Card of Love |by Emmalea Butler

Preparation
#1 - I made simple postcards on the computer including a simple nativity graphic. Each card has Merry Christmas and the child’s name included. At the bottom I printed a simple message, “GOD LOVES YOU!" (and so do I.) These were placed in envelopes and addressed to each child individually with the church's address, my return address label and a flag sticker as a fake stamp.

#2 - I placed a Bible inside a large envelope.
Write “To: Everyone – on Earth” with a return address, "From: GOD in 'Heaven'.”

Discussion
Do you like to get mail? Most people do – especially kids. When I was a kid, the mail I received was always good stuff like birthday cards, or a get well card when I was sick, or maybe an invitation to a party. Since I became an adult, I don’t always like my mail, because it might be a bill reminding me that I owe money – or a letter with bad news. (Show some business envelopes you have received as you discuss the adult mail.)

Getting mail at Christmas time can be a lot more fun than the rest of the year. Almost ALL the mail are beautiful Christmas cards. And guess what? Today, I have an envelope for each of you ---- with your name on it! Yep! YOU’VE GOT MAIL!

(Allow the children an opportunity to open their card. After reading the cards discuss how the card was specially made for each of them.)

When I decided to make the card for you, I thought about each one of you as I typed your name. I was excited to see my printer take my design from my computer screen and to see your name really was printed on it. I even thought about the possibility that you might like the card and would perhaps show it to someone or tell someone about getting the card from me.

See on your card that it says, “God Loves You”? HE loved you so much that HE sent HIS SON, Jesus, to be born on Christmas. Jesus was born so that we could see what God is like. Jesus led a perfect life – because, God is perfect. Jesus coming to earth was a special gift of love from God. (Read John 3:16) “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

God gave us another gift too. (Show the large envelope with the Bible in it) GOD has sent us MAIL that we can open every day. (Talk about who the envelope is addressed to). I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait to see what GOD has sent to EVERYONE! (open the envelope and show the Bible) WOW! Here it is! A letter from GOD that we can OPEN and read every day!

Every one of HIS messages to us is Perfect because we know that Every word in the Bible is. . . ABSOLUTELY TRUE! “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God (John 1:1).”

GOD loves us so much HE has written down stories to show us what happens when if we don’t obey HIM, what happens when we do obey HIM. HE has given us rules to show us what will protect us (Exodus 20:3-17) (10 commandments). We have HIS Word that shows us how we can be in heaven with HIM someday. (John 3:36) “He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.”

GOD has given every preacher and every Sunday School teacher the lessons that HE wants them to preach and teach. GOD thought of EVERYTHING ---- because HE loves YOU (and me) and everyone HE created. GOD wants us to share HIS WORD, HIS LOVE LETTERS TO US with the World. (Mark 16:15) “And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.” HE loves us all so much that HE wants to talk to us every day – HE wrote us so we could hear from HIM and we can PRAY – so HE can hear from us! (Jeremiah 29:12) “Then shall ye call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you.”

The card I gave you today was small – but it had an important message for you to remember, “GOD LOVES YOU.” So when you think about those 3 little words, think about GOD’S love letter to you and how BIG it is. READ God’s love letters every day. Hide it in your heart so you can “read” it in your mind when it is dark or you don’t have a Bible to read. TALK to GOD every day. HE will hear you.

Suggested Prayer: "Dear Heavenly Father, Thank you so much for your wonderful love letter, the Bible. Thank you that we can read it every day. Thank you that we can talk to You every day. Thank you for loving each one of us so much. In Jesus Name, AMEN."

Note: The 6 kids (3-9 years old) responded well. The Christmas cards were a hit. They loved their name on the envelope, and on the card Inside. They showed them to each other and checked out each other's envelopes. I explained, that is what God wants us to do with HIS Word - show it, read it, share it with others. Then I showed the big envelope - they read it was to the Everyone on Earth and it was from God in Heaven. One said, "It can't be Baby Jesus, its FLAT!" The stage was set for when they opened it and found the love letters from God! Turned out great.
