Suggested group: 4-12 children, approximately ages 7-11; adapt the reading support to your group.
Suggested time: 15-20 minutes.
Purpose: Retell the parable of the lost coin and connect the celebration in the story with Jesus' explanation in verse 10.
Materials: A Bible, six large paper cards per small group, and pencils. No real coins are needed.
Preparation
Write one of these statements on each card:
1. A woman has ten coins and loses one.
2. She lights a lamp.
3. She sweeps the house and searches carefully.
4. She finds the lost coin.
5. She calls her friends and neighbors to rejoice with her.
6. Jesus speaks about joy in the presence of God's angels over one sinner repenting.
These are paraphrases, not quotations. Card 6 is Jesus' explanation of the parable, not another event inside the woman's house. Keeping that distinction is part of the activity.
How to play
Read Luke 15:8-10 aloud while children listen without handling the cards. Give each group a shuffled set. Their shared task is to arrange cards 1-5 in story order and place card 6 underneath as the explanation. Do not award points for speed.
Assign three rotating jobs: the reader reads a card, the arranger suggests a position, and the checker finds support in the passage. In a larger group, children can share each job. A child may point, speak, or ask a partner to read; no one has to read aloud to participate.
After the group has arranged its cards, invite each child to explain one connection: What happened before this? What happened next? Which verse helps us check? If children disagree, read the relevant verse together and let them move a card. A correction counts as progress toward the shared task.
For a second round, turn one card face down. Ask the group to supply the missing part in its own words. Reveal the card and compare it with the Bible. Rotate the hidden card so several children have a turn. End the round after everyone has had a chance to contribute.
Debrief
Ask: What was lost? What did the woman do? Whom did she invite to share her joy? Then reread verse 10 and ask what Jesus says brings joy in the presence of God's angels. Explain repentance in language suited to the children: turning from sin toward God. Do not make children disclose personal wrongdoing to play or participate.
Close with one shared retelling. Remind the group that finding a missing card was our game; the passage's message comes from Jesus' words. Invite the children to thank God in prayer for welcoming those who turn to him.
Adaptation
For children who need reading support, add simple drawings of coins, a lamp, a broom, a found coin, and celebrating neighbors. Keep the explanation card visually separate and read it aloud. Older children can write their own faithful summaries and compare them with the passage.
