Here’s a simple lesson idea to help kids understand Matthew 6:13: “Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.” Using familiar street signs (DEAD END, STOP, YIELD, U-TURN, ONE WAY), children can see what it means to not yield to temptation and to follow God’s way instead.

Can be paired with The Prayer of Jesus or Signs of the Times-Modern Parables for a memorable way to show how God’s Word helps us stand strong. You will need several street signs, which you can download here.

Say: Today’s Bible memory verse comes from the prayer Jesus taught His followers to pray. Let’s say it together: “Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.” —Matthew 6:13

What do you think Jesus meant by this? (Discuss)

Another way to say this verse is: "Don’t let us yield to temptation, but rescue us from the evil one."

First, who is the evil one? (The evil one is Satan/Devil)

When you hear the word yield, what does it mean and what comes to mind? (Discuss)

(Show the yield sign.)

To yield means to give in or to make way for something or someone. A yield sign tells drivers to slow down, be ready to stop, and give the right-of-way to others already moving through.

Let’s look at some other street signs. (Show the signs—especially the DEAD END, STOP, U-TURN, and ONE WAY.)

Let’s talk about what these signs mean and what could happen if people ignore or disobey them? (Discuss)

Now I’m going to read a true story about what Jesus did when He was tempted by Satan.

Read Matthew 4:1–11 from a child-friendly Bible.

What do you notice happening in this story? (Discuss)

Satan attacked Jesus when he was at a weak point. Both Satan and Jesus used God’s Word. But Satan twisted Scripture to try to trick Jesus. The Bible tells us that Satan can appear like an angel of light, and if we don’t know God’s truth, we can be fooled.

Jesus did not yield to Satan, he did not give in to Satan. Instead, He used God’s Word to stand strong and defend Himself.

God’s Word is like the street signs we talked about—it shows us the right way to go and keeps us safe.

(Hold up each sign as you say the following):

Without Jesus, we are heading toward a DEAD END.
We need to STOP and realize we need Him.
We must YIELD our lives to God.
We need to make a U-TURN—that means to repent and turn away from sin.
And go the other way to follow Jesus, because He is the ONE WAY to heaven!

Pray
“Dear Jesus, thank you for not yielding to Satan. Thank you for dying on the cross to forgive my sins and rising from the dead to give me eternal life. Help me not yield to temptation, and protect me from the evil one. Amen.”
