Luke 10 begins, “After this, the Lord appointed seventy-two* others and sent them two by two ahead of Him to every town and place He was about to visit.” Then Jesus told them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into His harvest.”
After what? What is Luke referring to?
In chapter 9, we read about Jesus calling the Twelve disciples together and giving them power and authority over all demons and the power to cure diseases. Then He sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal the sick.
Following that are several major events, including the Feeding of the 5,000 (vv. 10–17), Peter’s Confession (vv. 18–20), and the Transfiguration (vv. 28–36).
Then, in chapter 10, Jesus appoints 72* others. Reading this passage today, I realized I haven’t fully appreciated the quiet role these 72 played in bringing in the harvest and advancing God’s kingdom. Jesus gave them instructions, and they obeyed.
We don’t know their names.
But we do know something far more important: their names were written in Heaven (v. 20).
As I thought about this and the importance of making the gospel message known—bringing in the harvest—I was reminded that our work in ministry is often done quietly too, without accolades or recognition.
Yet consider this: we know the names of the Twelve. We’ve read about their successes and their failures, particularly Judas’ betrayal. So being known isn’t always a plus! Amen?
Maybe you’re one of those quiet workers. You teach a class, read the Bible to
kids, share the gospel, encourage a friend, or plant a seed without ever knowing what became of it.
The world may never know your name or the work that you do, but the LORD of the Harvest
does!
And that got me thinking about a simple way we can help spread the Good News. I created six harvest-themed John 3:16 bookmarks—three for adults and three for kids. Print them, cut them apart, and give them away.
Tuck one into a Bible, hand one to a child, give one to a
friend, or someone you meet along your way.
