Fruit of the Spirit

Food Devotion | by Emmalea Butler

Read Galatians 5:22-23 from a child-friendly Bible.

Ask children, "How can you give away the Fruit of the Spirit--Love, Joy, Peace?" etc.

Utilize the opportunity to elaborate on: Luke 6:38, “Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you."

Sharing Interaction: You will need, various fruits, a large mixing bowl, a small Styrofoam bowl for each child, a knife for each adult helping in the class, and plastic spoons (for eating). Wash the fruit that will not be peeled such as grapes, strawberries, etc.

Give each child one type of fruit. (Peach, banana, grapes, strawberries, etc.) Point out that they can each enjoy the fruit that they have – keeping it for themselves. Ask if they would be willing to share their fruit with the others in the class.

Have helpers peel and cut each child’s fruit into the small bowls. (Softer fruits can be cut using dull, plastic knives so children can help cut.) Point out that although the fruit that they each have individually is nice and tasty – their one bowl is not very much to share with the class. Let’s see what happens if we place ALL of the fruit in one bowl. WOW! What nice, large fruit salad they now have to share with others.

Divide the shared fruit into the children’s bowls and give them a spoon. Pray for God’s blessing for the food, and His special gifts to us.
