The Bible teaches us that we die because of sin. Without Jesus, we are lost--dead in our trespasses and sins. What do you suppose that means? Trespasses and sins are actions and thoughts that go against God's
rules--his way of doing things. The Bible tells us that the punishment for sin is
death--physical and spiritual death (Romans 6:23). Everyone who has ever been born sins. And because we sin, we cannot be part of God's eternal kingdom! So what are we to do?
We can't do anything to save ourselves, but God has done something for us!
A loooong time ago, before Jesus came to earth, God spoke to the prophet Ezekiel. God showed him a valley filled with dried-up, dead bones. The bones pictured God's people, who felt hopeless and cut off. But God promised to give them life!

In Ezekiel's vision, God caused the dry bones to come together. Then God breathed life into them! God promised his people, "I will put my Spirit in you and you will live" (Ezekiel 37:14).
And do you know what? Because God loves us, he sent Jesus to earth to die in our place and take the punishment we deserve for sinning against God! The Bible says that if we confess our sins to
God--which means admitting that we have done wrong--God will forgive us and cleanse us from our sins. When we trust in Jesus, God's Holy Spirit gives us new life!

That's why the Bible says that anyone who belongs to Christ is a new creation. Jesus takes us from spiritual death to life!
